There’s something special about hitting the open road. The music’s up, the snacks are within reach, and the anticipation of the destination buzzes in the air. But road trips are only fun when you’re prepared.
Some of my favorite childhood memories come from road-tripping with my family to cities like Chicago, St. Louis, and Detroit. We had a ritual every time. A quick trip to the mechanic the day before to make sure the car was ready. Bags packed with clothes, toys, and whatever we couldn’t live without. A cooler filled with sodas, juice, sandwiches, and snacks galore. And of course, the OG GPS—the trusty road atlas. Who remembers those?
Fast forward to today and not much has changed, except maybe the map book has been replaced with Google Maps. The truth is, the essentials are still the same. Preparation is what makes the difference between a stressful ride and an unforgettable one.
Before setting out, make sure your car is road-ready with fresh fluids, good tires, a strong battery, and working lights. Keep your license, registration, and insurance handy. Tuck an emergency kit in the trunk with jumper cables, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and a few basic tools just in case.
Comfort matters too. Snacks and water are non-negotiables, so don’t skimp on packing your favorites. A phone charger, power bank, and hands-free mount will keep you connected and safe while navigating. Sunglasses, blankets, and comfy clothes make the long stretches easier.
And don’t forget about yourself. A good night’s rest before you leave makes all the difference. On the road, take breaks every couple of hours to stretch and stay alert. Plan gas stops ahead of time, especially if you’re heading into rural areas. Check the weather and traffic before you go so you’re not caught off guard. If you’re driving an electric vehicle, plan your charging station stops in advance just as carefully as you would with gas.
With a little preparation, road trips can still be just as fun, freeing, and memorable as they were growing up. So buckle up and ride along with me. I’m headed to New Orleans and taking you with me virtually—sharing updates, tips, and a few surprises along the way
